There is a difference between the intent to make money on eBay, other than just selling on eBay your old stuff, taking up space in your garage. You must think like a merchant and apply some techniques to advance your sales and profit. Here is a little insight into how to make money on eBay…

Trading merchandise worth tens of billions of dollars per year, allows people to make money on eBay. This is common practice on eBay. People use this media for many purposes, while a cool million, make money on eBay as part of their monthly income, regularly. Getting rich is not a realistic expectation, yet using sales techniques, selling the right products, and looking at this venture as a business for all intents and purposes, one you are willing to work for, will provide you good living.

I will not elaborate on the basic use of eBay. I assume you know you can buy or sell items on eBay to registered members and pay or get paid in various ways. You are evaluated, of course, by the people who do business with you, as they feedback on the parameters of your transaction regarding the validity, accuracy, reliability and quality of the items and service they have received.

Bad feedback means nobody will count on you, and nobody will do business with you. This way, you will not make money on eBay ever.

Start your business with your own stuff, then, your neighbor’s stuff. Ask to sell other people’s stuff by advertising it locally. You can charge 30%-50% commission for these sales easy. So far, you can make money with only minimum expenses, as you don’t pay for this stuff.

One way is to buy a few cheap items on eBay and get good reviews from sellers. On eBay, all reviews make up your image, also as a buyer, so you can build up a good image by doing this. A lot of buyers look carefully at feedback ratings, and choose to do business with the seller who has the best score.

The next step to make money on eBay is to become a merchant.

It’s time to find the right products so you can really make money on eBay. Of course, all you want is to buy cheap and sell at a higher price.
Do some research – if you already think of a product, find out if there is a demand for it. Next, check it’s ongoing selling price, and your competitors.
If you don’t have a product yet:

  • Look for unusual, hard-to-find items, to sell at a discount. You can use items unique to your country, region or culture.
  • Go into local department stores and learn from their display, which items are in front, meaning they are in great demand, try to obtain these items and sell them with a profit.
  • Buy items good for a certain time of the year, like toys for Christmas, costumes for Halloween. Just buy them, after the holiday, cheap, and store them to sell next year at a season price.
  • Look for a small niche market. These buyers will grab these rare products in no time and you will make money on eBay easy.
  • Look for products with spelling mistakes in the title. People don’t take these items seriously and you can buy a good product in a low price and resell it with profit.
  • You can use software which tells you the last possible auction moment, so can get in to a good deal.
  • Get up at 3 o’clock in the morning. A lot of people set their sale to end, unknowingly, in the middle of the night. This is a good time to get a good bargain with no competitors. If you set the resale end time to 19h or 20h yourself, especially on weekends, you are guaranteed to make money on eBay.

Pricing your item is extremely important to succeed in making money on eBay. Check your shipping costs, insurance costs etc. nobody will buy items if it costs them more than its worth, just to get it. Yet, research shows buyers will buy more from one seller selling the same product at a cheaper price, although it’s shipping costs are higher totaling to the same selling price as other sellers. Go figure.

The title of your product will help you to make money on eBay faster. You have to be sound professional:

  • Don’t use adjectives and superlatives in the title.
  • Write down the facts about the item, as precise as you can.
  • Use common keywords associated with this item for better search results.
  • In your item description, try to differentiate your product from other of the same kind.

There are many ways to make money selling on eBay. Learn as much as you can and get as many tips as you can to maximize your profits. Good luck.
